Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, previously called Crawford Market, is the oldest and most famous market in Mumbai was built in 1869. The market is situated next to the C.S.T. Complex and adjacent to the J.J. School of Art. The market is spread over an area of 24,000 square feet. The structure of the market was designed by the British architect Sir William Emerson and it was completed during the tenure of Arthur Crawford, the first municipal commissioner of Mumbai. The mandai is very crowded and a busy place throughout the day.
